I attended our annual OBI meeting this year which was held in San Diego, Oct, 10-13. We discussed some very important topics that included smile design, orthognathic surgery to correct skeletal deficiencies, sleep apnea and many other related topics. I always enjoy these annual meetings since it gives me a good pulse on what is the most current procedures, techniques and most important, the ideas that are advancing dentistry. Its a group of like-minded professionals that want to see how we can improve our care to our patients with principles that stand the test of time. This year Mary Burns, orthodontist and OBI faculty member from Hope, Pennsylvania along with Richard Christensen, orthodontist from Yakima, WA, gave a great presentation with cases on how orthodontics with bioesthetic principles can correct airway problems. Their approach on how to address airway problems is very unique since they utilize the principles in biology to help form the diagnosis and treatment that will lead to better treatment results than other modes of treatment that are currently being used for sleep apnea. I was able to meet Bob Williams, who founded the Roth/Williams institute, who shed light on growth and development in the early years that can affect airway. I look forward to our next meeting.
