I had the opportunity of attending the WCLI (World Clinical Laser and Imaging) Institute’s annual meeting down in San Diego, Ca in June. There were many presentations on a variety of new dental procedures that can be used with the laser. The Biolase laser is one of the only lasers that can be used on hard and soft tissue. The reason for this has to do with the wavelength which that the laser operates at. This allows us to use the laser on gum tissue for periodontal procedures as well as on hard tissue like the tooth for restorations. I routinely use it for dental implant surgeries as well as periodontal grafting procedures. Some new uses that I found interesting is in the field of physical therapy and chiropractics. They are using the laser to help in the healing of athletic injuries and seeing a very fast recovery.
